Electricity Market Deregulation in SA

The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation process ever since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered in another state.

The next step, which happened sooner in some states, was the dividing up of state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce a greater degree of competition the market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors have the responsibility for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and maintain the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. States have between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

On 1 July 2013 , the South Australia electricity market was fully deregulated. This enabled customers to switch to a provider who had cheaper electricity prices.

Electricity in South Australia is supplied by one main distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity throughout South Australia
  • Note, some remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.

Reduce your power bills with these energy -saving tips

Here is a list of easy to implement tips to reduce your usage of energy

  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather (jumper, beanie, warm socks, booties).
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent hot or cold air entering or escaping through the gaps under doors or around windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise use of the clothes dryer. Instead, dry your clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating your house by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Close the doors of rooms that you don't use, so that you just heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening let the cooler air in, then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Rely on natural light if possible, and replace old lights with LED lights.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and you have made the decision to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new energy provider must give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to cancel the process and remain with your old energy provider.
No. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor will continue to supply the energy to your premises even after you switch to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your energy bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from a distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be confident that your energy supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. But the switchover cannot go ahead until your present provider has sent your final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. So, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It could take up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will also inform your current provider that you are leaving them. The change to the new provider won't happen straight away, because the old provider has to do a meter reading one final time. and then send you a final bill. Your new provider starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is totally free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
