Electricity Market Deregulation in NSW

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation ever since the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation was to establish a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in other states.

The next step, which occurred sooner in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater level of competition the energy market was split into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. The states have between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.

The market in NSW was completely deregulated on 1 July 2014 . This meant that consumers could now change to a provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is provided by the following distributors

  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy's network provides 2.4 million people with electricity in households and businesses located in Sydney's Greater West, the Southern Highlands and Blue Mountains.
  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid distributes electricity to inner, eastern and northern metropolitan Sydney and in the Hunter region and Newcastle.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity regional and country NSW, and throughout southern regional QLD.

Tips for reducing energy consumption to save on your bills

Here are a few easy to implement ways for reducing how much you spend on energy

  • Minimise draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or out through gaps under doors or around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Turn your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Use the clothes dryer less frequently. Hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Wear warm clothing, instead of turning on the heater (booties, warm socks, beanie, jumper).
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening the windows at night-time to let the cool air in, and shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Stop the sun over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Reduce the use of lights by making use of the available natural light.
  • Close the doors of rooms that aren't in use, so you just cool or heat a smaller space.

FAQ about switching energy providers

This section contains frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and have made the decision you want to switch energy providers.

It's okay if you change your mind because your new energy provider allows you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you that have ten days during which you can cancel the process and go back to your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). This distributor will continue to supply energy to your house even when you change over to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from your distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that your energy supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the actual switchover will not happen until after your current provider has sent you your final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll also notify the current provider that you are leaving them. The actual switch to the new provider will not happen straight away, because the current provider needs to read your meter again, one final time. and then issue you their final bill. The new provider will begin charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who supplies the energy to your house continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is completely free to you. Instead, we will be paid a commission by the new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
