FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and you've made the choice to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new energy provider must give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and go back to your old energy provider.
No. You won't need to do anything like that. The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor will continue to supply energy to your premises if you switch to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your energy bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from the distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, your energy supply will not be interrupted because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, often in less than 24 hours. However, the switchover can't take place until your old provider has issued you your final bill, and they can only do that once they've read your meter one final time. Therefore, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll tell your current provider that you're leaving them. The switch in providers will not happen straight away, because the old provider will have to read your meter again, one final time. then issue you their final bill. Your new provider begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor who supplies the energy to your premises continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is totally free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Lower your power bills with these energy -saving tips

Here are some easily implemented tips to reduce how much energy you use

  • Turn off your appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving via gaps under doors and around windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Minimise usage of the clothes dryer. Hang clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather (booties, beanie, jumper, warm socks).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Close doors of rooms that you don't use, so you just cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating rooms by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Reduce the use of lights. Rely on natural light if possible.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows during the night to let the house cool down, then shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
