Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Melbourne
Since the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a deregulation process. The first stage involved establishing an intra-state electricity grid that enabled electricity that was produced in one state to be sold to customers in a different state.
The next stage, which happened sooner in some states than others, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In order to promote a greater degree of competition the energy market was split into two levels
The distributors have the responsibility for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
The electricity retailers sell the electricity to the customers and are responsible for billing. Every state has from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.
In July 2008 , the Melbourne electricity market was fully deregulated. This allowed consumers to change to the provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.
Electricity in Victoria is supplied by the following five distributors
- Ausnet Services
AusNet Services distributes electricity to the eastern outer & northern suburbs of Melbourne and eastern Victoria. - Powercor Australia
Powercor delivers electricity to the western Victoria and western suburbs of Melbourne. - Citipower
Citipower distributes electricity throughout Melbourne City and it's inner suburbs. - Jemena
Jemena distributes electricity in the south-western and northern suburbs of Melbourne. - United Energy Distribution
United Energy supplies electricity in the southern suburbs of Melbourne and in the Mornington Peninsula.
Tips for using less electricity to save money
Here are a few easy to implement tips for reducing how much you spend on electricity
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Rather than turn on the heater, put on warmer clothing (warm socks, jumper, beanie, booties).
- Turn off all your appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
- Minimise usage of your clothes dryer. Instead, dry your clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
- Minimise draughts. Prevent hot or cold air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Minimise lighting by using natural light where possible.
- Stop the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
- Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening let the house cool down, and shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
- Close doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so that you just heat or cool a smaller space.
