Electricity Market Competition in SA

The Australian electricity market has been gradually deregulating since the late 1990s. The first step was to establish a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in other states.

Another stage, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the breaking up of state owned monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to produce more competition the market was separated into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors are responsible for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and maintain the powerlines and poles, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Each state has between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2013 , South Australia 's energy market was fully deregulated. This meant that customers could change to the provider that had cheaper electricity prices.

South Australia has only one main electricity distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity throughout South Australia
  • Note, electricity in a some remote areas of SA is distributed by other companies.

Tips for reducing electricity usage and lower your bills

Here are a few easily implemented tips for reducing how much electricity you use

  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air entering or escaping through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Use your clothes dryer less frequently. Hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, instead of turning on the heater (beanie, booties, warm socks, jumper).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Use less lighting by making use of the available natural light.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening allow the cooler air in, and then closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that aren't in use, so you only cool or heat a smaller area.

FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and you've chosen to switch electricity and gas providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new electricity and gas provider has to give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days during which you can change your mind and remain with your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). That distributor continues to supply the electricity and gas to your premises when you change to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity and gas bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity and gas directly from the distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your electricity and gas supply because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the switchover can't happen until after your old provider has issued you a final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. So, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and will tell the current provider of your move away from them. The changeover to the new provider won't happen immediately, because the current provider has to do one final meter reading. and then issue you their final bill. The new provider only starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your house continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is completely free to you. We will be paid a commission by your new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
