The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to a different state.
The next step, which occurred sooner in some states, was the splitting up of state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater level of competition the market was divided into two levels
- Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers. - Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. States have from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.
The market in South Australia was completely deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This enabled customers to change to a provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.
Electricity in South Australia is supplied by one main distributor
- SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity throughout South Australia - Note, electricity in a few remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.
Tips for reducing electricity consumption and lower your bills
Here is a list of easy to implement tips for reducing household expenditure on electricity
- Turn your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
- Use your clothes dryer less. Hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Dress for the weather, instead of turning on the heater (booties, warm socks, beanie, jumper).
- Minimise draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or out through the gaps under doors or around windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows at night-time to let the cool air in, then closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
- Stop the sun over-heating your home by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
- Reduce your use of lights by using natural light where possible. Turn lights off when there's no on in the room.
- Close the doors to areas of your home that you aren't using, so you just cool or heat a smaller space.
