Electricity Market Competition and Deregulation in Qld

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation that began in the late 1990s. The first stage involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next step, which occurred sooner in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater level of competition the energy market was split into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The market in South East Queensland was completely deregulated on 1 July 2016 . This allowed consumers to switch to a provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.

Two electricity distributors supply all of Queensland

  • Energex
The Energex network distributes electricity in an area covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the NSW border in the south to Gympie in the north. This covers the major population areas of Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
The Ergon Energy network services Queensland including coastal and rural areas and the remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Reduce your energy bills with these electricity -saving tips

Here are a few easy to implement tips to reduce your usage of electricity

  • Turn your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Minimise draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or out through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for cold weather (booties, warm socks, beanie, jumper).
  • A hot water bottle can be used as a cheap replacement for an electric blanket.
  • Reduce usage of the clothes dryer. Hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening the windows at night-time to let the cool air in, and shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Stop the sun over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Minimise lighting. Rely on natural light if possible. Turn lights off when you leave the room.
  • Close doors to rooms that you don't use, so you just cool or heat a smaller space.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and have made the decision you want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new electricity provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you that have ten days during which you can cancel the process and go back to your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor will continue to supply electricity to your house even when you switch to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from a distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that your electricity supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually within 24 hours. But the switchover cannot happen until your current provider has sent you your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It could take up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll also notify your current provider that you're switching away from them. The actual switch to the new provider will not happen immediately, because the old provider needs to read your meter again, one final time. and then issue you a final bill. Your new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. Instead, we will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
