For many, the thought of switching gas providers is anxiety invoking. Thinking about the logistics involved and whether you’ll be left without gas for a few days can be overwhelming. But, in reality, the process is actually quite simple and straightforward. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Switch Gas Providers

Before you switch gas providers, you should first compare gas providers with Energy and Gas. That way, you can find a provider who is able to cater to your needs or better suit your budget.

Once you have chosen your new provider, the process involves:  

• Contacting your new gas provider and asking to switch to their services
• Your gas provider will then contact your gas distributor on your behalf and send them a request to switch
• This request will then be forwarded to your current gas supplier
• Your new gas provider will take over your account after your final meter read
• You will receive a final bill from your previous gas provider

During the process, you will need to provide your new supplier with certain details, including your address, bank details and the Delivery Point Identifier – which is the meter number that can be found at the top of any of your gas bills.

Which States Can Change Gas Providers?

Currently, in Australia, almost all residents are able to change their gas providers with the exception of households located in regional Queensland and the Northern Territory. However, if you’re wishing to change to a natural gas supplier, availability will depend upon the area you live in and whether it is serviced by the gas mains, which are underground pipes which supply households with gas.

What to Consider When Switching Gas Providers

There are a few factors you should keep in mind when switching gas providers, including:

• Usage Charges – Does your supplier charge a set rate or charge in ‘blocks’?
• Supply Charges – If the usage charge is exceptionally low, make sure you’re not paying too much for your supply charge.
• Hidden Fees – Look out for credit card surcharges, connection fees, late payment fees and paper billing charges.

Incentives and Benefits – Does your provider offer additional benefits, discounts or incentives which will help to get more bang for your buck?
