FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and you have made the choice to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new energy provider will allow you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and stay with your old energy provider.
No. You won't need to do anything like that. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). The distributor will continue to supply energy to your premises when you change over to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from your distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, your energy supply won't be interrupted because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the final switchover won't happen until after your old provider has issued your final bill, and they can't do that until they've done your final meter reading. So, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will tell the current provider that you're changing providers. The changeover to your new provider won't happen straight away, though, because the current provider will have to read your meter one final time. and then issue you their final bill. The new provider only starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who feeds the energy to your house continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is completely free to you. Instead, we will be paid a commission by your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips for reducing your energy usage to save on your bills

Here are a few easily implemented ways for reducing how much you spend on energy bills

  • Don't use the clothes dryer as often. Hang the clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through gaps under doors and around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Dress for cold weather, rather than turn on the heater, (booties, jumper, beanie, warm socks).
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so that you just cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating rooms by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows at night to let the house cool down, and then closing them each morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Reduce your use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible.
